Puzzlewood is an ancient woodland site, near Coleford in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England. The site, covering 14 acres, shows evidence of open cast iron ore mining dating from the Roman period, and possibly earlier.

In 1848 some workmen, after moving a block of stone in the woods, found a small cavity in the rocks. In this cavity, hidden away, were three earthenware jars containing over 3,000 Roman coins. No-one knows why the coins were hidden away in the cliff face nor by whom.

J. R. R. Tolkien, a frequent visitor to the Forest of Dean, may have visited Puzzlewood, and many believe Puzzlewood was the inspiration for the fabled forests of Middle-earth, such as the Old Forest, Mirkwood, Fangorn or Lothlórien contained within The Lord of the Rings. J.K Rowling is also said to have visited Puzzlewood, and it may have been this that influenced her idea of The Forbidden Forest in the Harry Potter books.

Just earlier “I Am the Best” by 2NE1 came on and I thought of the Korean cameraman from my trip. It was Friday night and I remember sitting in the lobby messaging my friend on Kakao so we knew where to meet the next day. No one else was in the lobby from what I can remember, so the cameraman sat next to me and started a conversation. After introducing ourselves we just chatted about the trip and such and he was super nice. At one point we both went to answer our phones and while he was texting he started humming “I Am the Best” and I started to hum along and he cracked up and asked me how I knew the song. I told him that I’m into Kpop and like 2NE1. A little while later a girl came and sat next to us. She was his sister and he introduced me to her, telling me that she is a fashion designer (she had made the jacket he was wearing, and it was pretty nice.) Then they left to go have dinner together. The next day we had a farewell luncheon, at the end of which the cameraman played a video he had made for us. For the portion of the video that focused on Friday, “I Am the Best” started playing and I cracked up. Ah I really want to go back to Seoul~ really hope I can go next year to study!
